Roy Goodrum 1927-2006
Sadly we lost our Hon President in October. Roy had been a part of the Gropers for almost forever and as if the Gropers weren't enough he was also heavily involved in the Federation of Sidecar Clubs as well, holding the position of vice president for a time.
Bikes and particularly outfits were a huge part of Roy and his wife Chick's lives and it was very telling to all of us that after the accident some 6 years ago he was detemined to "get back on the horse" eventually riding down to the camping weekend on the outfit, towing the trailer tent, with the disabled badge firmly attached to the windscreen!
Unfortunately the injuries Roy received in the accident did finally take their toll on him and he was unable to ride. Roy and Chick moved up to Cambridgeshire a couple of years ago, but lack of mobility and distance didn't stop him coming to visit the club whenever he was able. In recognition we made him Honoury President at the beginning of this year.
Roy passed away peacefully on 25th October 2006, his outfit still in his garage. Chick was kind enough to ask the Gropers to escort Roy to the chapel, where as a true tribute to Roy's life and commitment to motorcycling, many more bike and outfits were waiting to see him off, the chapel stuggling to contain everyone. Chick had asked that, instead of flowers, could donations be made to Demelza in Roy's name. Again the old boy did us proud and £667 was raised, for which Chick would like to thank you all.
Roy touched so many lives and his loss leaves a gap not only in the lives of his wife, children, grand and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and the rest of his family, but hundreds of others that shared his 2 and 3 wheeled passion. RIP Roy - Ride Free!
